Collision course for unbeaten foes

AFTER two rounds of the Sunraysia Table Tennis summer pennant Jackson Tung and Wayne Carmichael are the only two players to remain undefeated in their singles matches, but that will all change this week when their team’s match up against each other. In round 2 results, Carmichael lead his team Weightmans Packaging to their second successive win to sit at the head of the ladder. Their 8-3 victory over Tankard Dental was an excellent team performance with Carmichael, and teammates Russell Walder and Lee Leeson winning three, two and one singles respectively.

Their opposition went in to this match missing father and son Paul and Jamie Kealley and they were replaced by Casper McCarthy and debutant to pennant one Marcu Cimino.

Weightmans, in addition to winning six singles, also were able to taste success in both doubles. For Tankard’s Rohan Reimers won two singles.

The highlight match was the singles victory by Weightmans Russell Walder over winter teammate Casper McCarthy in a lengthy five setter. Walder has started this season well and defeated McCarthy 5-11 11-7 11-8 8-11 12-10.

Regional Taxation Services remain the only other undefeated team winning a close contest over Choices Flooring Mildura 6-5 who were without number two and three players Leon Brown and Daniel Jansen, replaced by Liam Wood and Quentin Clark respectively.

The highlight match here was the first doubles, the RTS pair of Kate Carmichael and Thanh Nguyen took a 10-6 lead in the first game before opponents Reece Kurrle and Wood rattled off six winners in succession to take the first game and in an exciting finish. They took the points narrowly 12-10 4-11 9-11 11-6 11-9 a topsy turvy match.

Kate Carmichael won three singles including a three-set victory over Kurrle which contained many long hard-hit rallies as these two seem too each time they play.

For Choices both Kurrle and Wood won two singles each.

With the scores locked at fiver rubbers all Jason Gifkins for RTS outlasted Quentin Clark in four sets to allow his team to remain undefeated.

Mallee Bearings with a 6-5 victory over Cookes Pools & Spas recorded their first win of the season on the back of skipper Jackson Tung who again won three singles and to cap off a successful night he took part in both doubles’ victories with teammates Liam Wood and Tom Morrison.

Liam Wood also played his part with a straight sets singles win over Ed Hung in the first match of the night however he would consider himself unlucky going down narrowly in two five set matches against Mark Dorman and brother Dylan after he had led two games to love against both.

For Cooke’s Dorman and Dylan Wood both won two singles and Ed Hung one, however the lack of success in the doubles was costly as they seek their first win.
