Country cup the mane attraction

THE Pooncarie Cup will thunder down home strait this Saturday, more than a 100 years after its inaugural run.

Pooncarie Racing Club president Lyle Massey said the event was looking great in the lead-up to the much loved event.

“I’ve got no doubt this could turn out to be our best race meeting,” he said.

“It’s a pretty unique racing day, our crowd comes from everywhere, and we’ve got jockeys from around the globe lined up.

“Even the weather is looking good.”

Attractions on the day include a live band, as well as refreshment vans, raffles, and six bookies and a TAB onsite for those wishing to back a favourite or something with longer odds.

The feature race, the Wentworth and District Community Bank Branch Bendigo Bank Pooncarie Cup has a prize pool of $20,000.

In the afternoon the club will play host to the seasonal fashions on the field, with cash and prizes on offer for the best dressed lady, and gent.

The model of the best headwear, as well as the best dressed tiny tot and teen will also be crowned on the day.

Mr Massey said the annual race provided a chance for people from far and wide to come together.

“It’s a nice tradition for farmers to have a day off and mingle, have a few drinks and a yarn and just enjoy a great day out,” he said.

Nearby camping sites are available for anyone wanted to stay in the area, with a township shuttle service running for the price of a gold coin donation from the Pooncarie Hotel to the racecourse from 12pm.

A coach from Mildura will also run on the day, with passengers to be collected at 10am from the corner of Deakin Avenue and Eighth Street.

Seats must be paid ahead of time and can be reserved by contacting 0407 044 255.
