Magpies star not ruling out finals

MERBEIN centre Sophie Gray says her side will “take it game by game” as the door remains ajar for the Magpies to make the SFNL A Grade netball finals.

A place in the top five is still a possibility after Merbein broke a six-game losing run with a 48-44 win over Red Cliffs at the weekend.

Gray was a strong performer in the victory and the round 15 Netballer of the Round said it was a hard-fought contest.

“The whole team played really well together,” she said.

“In the third quarter, we can sometimes have a lull, but we managed to hang on and came out really strong in the fourth quarter as a team.”

With only two games remaining in the regular season and a bye in between, the Magpies find themselves in a tough spot to pass either Ouyen United or South Mildura to play finals.

“We have hope that we can make it, but we’ll just take it game by game,” Gray said.

“Of course, there is an opportunity to make it to the finals, and we’ll just play the games to the best of our abilities to hopefully win.”

Gray and her two sisters, Johannah and Emily, help make up the spine of the Magpies A Grade and the trio have played together for multiple seasons.

Sophie said that the siblings’ chemistry translated to netball as they always seemed to know where each other was on the court.

“The three of us coach, train, and umpire. We do it all together,” she said.

“I’m really blessed to have the opportunity to play with my sisters it has been really rewarding.”

As the round 15 Netballer of the Round, Gray receives $150 from Mildura Golf Resort.
