Nguyen nets six for United

SIX goals for Mildura United’s Tien Dat Nguyen headlined an eventful contest with Three Colours under lights at Soccer Park in round 11 of the S-League season.

Half a dozen yellow cards were also shown by the referee during the willing contest last Friday night, which saw United come away with a massive 9-2 victory.

Nguyen’s six strikes for the blue and whites equalled the haul from Irymple Knights’ Jordan Cox earlier this year.

In a chaotic opening five minutes, Nguyen struck the first blow within two minutes before Ali Ehsani doubled United’s advantage a minute later.

Another minute after Isaac Reiman opened the scoring for Colours as a shootout was on the cards.

Nguyen put that to bed, however, completing his hat-trick just after the half-hour mark and adding a fourth for good measure to ensure a 5-1 half-time lead.

Another two Nguyen goals in the 10 minutes post-break completed his big night out, while Bireke Kumbuka added a second-half brace for good measure.

Oktay Samet, the leading scorer for Colours this season, also scored late in the second half.

Meanwhile, also under Friday night lights, Irymple Knights returned to the winners’ list to keep their title ambitions alive, scoring a 3-1 victory over Nichols Point.

Emerging forward Kieran Burrows scored a brace while striker Cox also found the back of the net.

Brooklyn Hudak’s impressive campaign for the Pointers continued with their sole goal of the contest.

In Sunday’s senior women’s action, Mildura City’s eighth league title in nine seasons is all but confirmed following their 5-2 victory over Nichols Point.

Lillee Driscoll and Macalia Britton each scored a first-half brace as the champions-in-waiting took a 4-0 lead at the break.

City weren’t able to keep the clean sheet as Eve Rich scored for the Pointers in the 54th minute and Christine Cottrell converted from the penalty spot five minutes later.

Between those Pointers goals Ava Gemits also found the back of the net for the winners.

Nichols Point also gave a debut to Hildur Edholm, who is on exchange from Sweden.
