Looking back at the year that was

AS we reflect on 2024, it’s clear that this year has been one of growth, resilience, and community spirit.

On behalf of the Mildura Rural City Council, I am proud to share some of the major achievements we’ve accomplished together, and our hopes for the future.

Delivering new and improved community infrastructure has been at the top of the list, as we commenced the third stage of the Deakin Avenue Centre Median Redevelopment between Seventh and Eighth streets, while beginning work on the $6 million Red Cliffs Early Years Hub.

We also secured funding to deliver another important Early Years Hub at Nichols Point, and we look forward to watching all three of these important projects come to fruition in 2025.

We launched our first Regional Motorsport Strategy, a vital piece of work aimed at further growing and developing motorsport in our region, while constructing a half-basketball court in Red Cliffs.

This amazing addition to Quandong Park was only recently opened, with hundreds of young people taking part in a competition to help launch the space.

In line with our ongoing work to celebrate and support our diverse and vibrant region, it’s always a joy to visit our smaller towns to meet the passionate people who drive change and as recipients of our grant’s programs, build stronger communities.

The whole region will benefit from the 2024 tourism initiative, with Mildura rebranded to Tropical North Victoria in an engaging and creative marketing campaign led by our new ambassador, Aussie celebrity Shane Jacobson.

The campaign went viral, reaching millions nationwide while helping to further put our region on the map.

The excitement only continues in 2025, with the arrival of the Trail of Lights installation at Lock Island.

This epic light display will feature 12,500 ‘firefly’ lights among other attractions and is being created by world-renowned artist Bruce Munro.

The past 12 months also marked an historic changing of the guard following the recent council elections, bringing a couple of historic firsts with a majority female council and women leading all tiers of government in our region.

On that note, I look forward to working with our State and Federal members to achieve the best outcomes for our community.

Along with Deputy Mayor, Cr Ali Cupper and our councillor team, I am grateful to be on this journey with you all and look forward to what we can achieve together in the year ahead.

Cr Helen Healy

Mayor, Rural City of Mildura
