Free heart checks in Mildura today

FREE heart screening checks are being offered at Mildura Central today to raise community awareness of heart disease.

Pharmaceutical company Novartis has partnered with the Federal Government around Australia to provide proactive wellness checks outside of a traditional health setting.

The service, being offered near the Mildura Central food court, involves a free blood pressure test, heartbeat scan, BMI and body fat testing and a full cholesterol screening, delivered by a registered pharmacist.

Member for Mallee Anne Webster said checks were particularly targeted at shoppers aged 25-65.

"It just is incredibly helpful to know whether you're on a trajectory for a long life, or whether you might need some intervention," Dr Webster said.

"They're asking all kinds of questions like 'can you get a general practice appointment', 'do you have a regular general practitioner', information that is really important to know.”

More than four million Australians live with cardiovascular disease, and in the Mallee electorate it is estimated that it effects 9015, or about 1-in-20 people.

The heart screening checks are part of a walk-in service available until 4pm today, Thursday, September 28.

"It encourages people that if there's something wrong, which they (the pharmacist) can tell you on the day, to get in touch with your GP," Dr Webster said.

"It's a really great opportunity for anyone in the community to find out how they're tracking, particularly if they're not able to see a general practitioner right now.

"If we can prevent death by heart disease, then that's precisely what we need to do."
