SOCIAL interaction meets swimming when it comes to the Mildura Murray Masters Swimming Club.

Run in conjunction with Masters Swimming South Australia, the Mildura Murray Masters Biennial Carnival will come to Mildura Waves on October 26 and 27, with participants of all abilities aged 18 and over welcome.

The majority of masters swimmers are in the 50 to 70 age group but it accommodates for all competitors, and this year’s carnival is open to non-masters swimmers.

Club president Garry Healy said about 80 swimmers were expected to take part in the event.

“The majority of members will come from South Australia, however we do have a few coming from Sydney and Wagga Wagga,” he said.

“Masters swimming is based on age groups over a span of five years, and everything is all professionally put together including electronic timing.

“The social element to masters swimming is a really important aspect, probably more so than the actual competition.

“We have opened this event up to non-swimmers as well. We’re really hoping to try and pick up a few more locals to join our club, we have 12 as it stands currently.

“We cater for everyone, and anyone who comes can take things at their own pace.”

Those involved with masters swimming come from different backgrounds.

“A lot are people that swam as juniors that have continued, whereas someone like myself I was always around water and on the river but never swam as such, it’s something I took up later in life,” Healy said.

The carnival is supported by Masters Swimming South Australia, which will provide officials to run the meeting and a grant for Mildura Rural City Council.

Events start at 25 metres.

Mildura Murray Masters trains three mornings a week at Mildura Waves and welcomes anyone to join in no matter their ability.

Entries remain open until October 18. For further details visit www.mastersswimmingsa.org.au, or contact Christine at enquiries@mmmswimming.org.au or 0438 256 282.
