Gold rush at rowing regatta

SPECTATORS and competitors have hailed a successful Easter Rowing Regatta at Wentworth District Rowing Club.

Hosting duties for the shared event with Mildura Rowing Club fell to the NSW outfit for this year as near-perfect conditions greeted rowers who turned out from across Victoria and beyond.

Races took place over 1000m on Saturday and 500m on Sunday as the host clubs cleaned up with their fair share of gold medal on both days.

It was the first Easter Regatta held at Wentworth since flooding damaged the club rooms.

About 100 athletes took part in the event with strong contingents attending from Mercantile and Essendon rowing clubs, always big supporters of the Easter Regatta.

Other clubs such as Shepparton, Barwon, Corio Bay, Adelaide Uni and Dimboola were represented as well.

“It was a lovely weekend,” Wentworth District Rowing Club secretary Roz Ford said.

“The weather was perfect, maybe a little hot but no breeze to speak of and a reasonably good gathering down there.

“We would say it was pretty successful weekend.

“There was a lot of really good competition across two days, and some great junior numbers in under 15 and under 17 events.

“Both local clubs had a bit of success as well, which was great.”

Wentworth had some great results with gold medals in the Male Masters Eight, Male Masters Single Scull, Male Masters Coxless Quad Scull, Female Masters Single Scull, Male Masters Coxless Four, Female C Grade Coxed Four, Mixed Masters Double scull division 2, Female Masters Coxless Quad Scull, Female Masters Coxed Quad Scull.

Mildura, meanwhile, had victories in the Female Masters Double Scull, Male Masters Single Scull division 2, Male Masters Eight (with Torrens) and Male Masters Coxed Quad Scull.
