Regatta will be ‘oarsome’

A WEEKEND of rowing is a nice contrast to a typically loud Easter period, according to Wentworth District Rowing Club Secretary Roz Ford.

The Easter Regatta, a shared event between the Mildura and Wentworth District Rowing clubs will this year be held in Wentworth, and Ford is encouraging people to come by.

“It’s a very old tradition where Mildura would have a gathering on the Saturday and then Wentworth would have a gathering on the Easter Monday,” Ford said.

“But of course, when lots of holidays and stuff got changed, it all got consolidated a bit so now we share it, last year it was in Mildura.

“We have races over 1000 metres on Saturday and races over 500 metres on Sunday, so the Sunday race is fairly fast and furious.”

While entrants are down on last year, Ford believed the local competition would remain fierce.

“We’ve still got about 100 athletes that will be competing, it’s about 20 down on last year but we’re just grateful to be able to even have it,” Ford said.

“The floods left our clubhouse inundated two years ago and work on the bathrooms among other things have only just been completed this week.

“It’s all been painted and some new bars have been set up, one of our big jobs on the day will be to make sure everything is cleaned and organised.

“It’s really nice to be able to maintain these traditions … I’d love to encourage more people to get into it but it’s a really nice, calming feeling being out on the river.”

The Wentworth District Rowing Club Easter Regatta will run from 10am to 2pm on Saturday and 9am until 1pm on Sunday.
