Diving event returns

SPECTACULAR athleticism is set to be on display at next month’s Ripntear Peter and Patricia Morgan Memorial Meet and Victorian Country Diving Championships.

Returning this year after a two-year absence, Mildura’s number one diving event will take to the platform and boards of Mildura Waves and Aquatic Centre on January 20 and 21.

A number of impressive competitors, some whom are vying for national selection, are likely to take part, and in an Olympic selection year, everyone will be out to impress.

Divers across novice, junior, age and open categories will compete, while also included are Skins events for cash prizes, plus a Synchro Challenge in which divers are assigned a random partner to complete synchronised diving routines.

Ripntear is an age national qualifying event.

Diving Sunraysia head coach Leanne Morgan said a hot summer ahead means plenty of action poolside.

“After a few years away, it’s nice we can finally get in a routine once again of having the yearly event,” she said.

“It’s going to be a hot summer ahead, so there should be plenty of action around the pools. And on the same weekend, the MS Mega Swim will take place in the outdoor pool, so we’re expecting it to be pretty busy.

“We’ve heard from a few clubs in Melbourne and we’ve been in contact with Division South Australia, so hopefully we’ll have a better idea of entry numbers in the coming weeks.

Diving South Australia’s Maddie Loucas is the current holder of the Ripntear Amanda Johnson Perpetual award for best performance by a visitor in January this year.

Diving Sunraysia trains Monday and Wednesday from 4.30pm-6pm at Mildura Waves, as well as from 9.45am on Sundays.

Anyone interested in trying diving can contact Leanne Morgan on 0434 834 034 or ripntear0105@gmail.com.
