School holiday program set to spike

TEENAGERS interested in volleyball will have a chance to develop skills in a session coached by championship players.

Sunraysia Volleyball are hosting the event next week in Mildura.

“We haven’t held any school-holiday programs for a while now,” said Sunraysia Volleyball spokesperson Matt Wilkes.

“We thought it was time to get some buzz around volleyball and see if there are any young people that want to give it a go.”

The program is designed to advance overall basic skills, as well as serving techniques, and receiving serves.

It is mainly aimed at people with some level of experience, although newcomers are welcome.

“Volleyball is a fantastic sport, it’s fun and exciting,” Mr Wilkes said.

“You’re holding your breath all of the time and moving around the court at a dynamic speed.

“It’s a game of keeping a balloon off the ground.”

The sessions will be instructed by two members of Sunraysia’s winning men’s Victorian Country Championship team, Adrian Fox and Lachlan Giles.

The coaches are also current and former Phantoms squad members, respectively.

The Phantoms are a regional state league volleyball club based in western Victoria that aims to support and advance pathways for the sport in rural areas.

“Volleyball is a great indoor sport,” Mr Wilkes said.

“It gets you out of the weather, gets you jumping and moving.

“And there’s a really accepting community atmosphere.”

The program will be held at the Mildura Sporting Precinct on Friday, July 12.

There is a maximum of 12 participants per session, aged 14 to 18 years of age.

Reservations close next Wednesday and can be made by emailing secretary@sunraysiavolleyball.com.au
