Unique river cruises proving popular

ONE of the newest tourist attractions in the region that’s offering adventurers the chance to explore the Murray River has received a resoundingly positive reception.

The Tinny Rally is a 700-kilometre, seven-day journey down the river, starting in Mildura and finishing at Mannum in South Australia.

Participants make camp and visit some of the river’s best pubs and attractions along the way.

Event organiser Dan Willersdorf said the response to the inaugural event was overwhelmingly positive, leading to all three of this year’s trips selling out.

“People travel from all over Australia to do it, we have participants from Western Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory for the next one,” he said.

“It’s been on people’s bucket lists for a while to make a trip down the Murray, and this provides them with an organised opportunity to do it.

“We had 36 people on the last trip, and in March, we’ll have 100 people and 50 boats and by October, that number will be even higher.

“One lady said it was the best holiday she’d ever been on, so the response has been incredibly positive.”

Before the first journey in October last year, Mr Willersdorf spent a year scouting routes and campsites to try to give participants the best experience.

He highlighted the unique perspective of seeing the region by from the water’s level.

“Tinnies are an affordable adventure vehicle, you can buy them pretty inexpensively,” he said.

“They can take you a long way down the river, and seeing the countryside from the water gives you a completely different perspective.

“On the last trip, I saw snakes swimming across the river and kangaroos and emus along the banks, things you wouldn’t usually see otherwise.”
