Mildura the ‘next big thing’ in tourism

ONE of Australia’s best-known and most popular magazines has put Mildura alongside four exotic international locations in a list of “incredible destinations to visit in 2024”.

Under the headline Australia’s next big thing, the January edition of The Australian Women’s Weekly, which has a circulation of more than 1.3 million copies a month, names Mildura in a list that includes Austria, Vietnam, Arequipa in Peru, and Dundee/Perth in Scotland.

Written by the magazine’s travel editor, Bernard O’Shea, the piece quotes Expedia Brands managing director Daniel Finch, who says Mildura has risen to the top tier in online destination searches on Expedia and Wotif.

“Aussies have always loved a beach getaway, but as many consider creative ways to save on their holidays in 2024, Wotif is seeing increased interest for inland getaways that still offer a place to cool down by the water,” Mr Finch says.

The article goes on to describe Mildura as “the hub of Victoria’s food bowl … known for its fresh produce, multicultural influences, paddle boats and houseboats, and easygoing vibes”.

It points out that the region is serviced by Qantas, Rex and Bonza airlines, is within easy reach of the UNESCO World Heritage Mungo National Park, and says the Murray River between Mildura and Swan Hill has been dubbed “the Victorian Mediterranean”.
