Tennis report

IN a week of one-sided matches, the tight tussle in Division Two between Sacred Heart Starters and Nichols Point Pointers was a real stand out for Round 5 of Sunraysia District Tennis Association’s winter competition.

Matt Mandica and his partner got Sacred Heart off to a good start with an 8/6 win over Daniel Charlton and his teammate. Rakii (Lucky) Woetai-Rimapeni and Matthew Kirirua-Gill combined magnificently to take the second doubles 8/2 for the Pointers. Starters hit the front again when Mandica lead his team to another 8/6 win over Kirirua-Gill and Charlton.

As the women took to the court, Sacred Heart Starters were glad to welcome back Tess Robinson who made a seamless return teaming up with daughter Ally in an 8/4 win over Teoi Kirirua-Gill’s combo. Tess continued on her winning way in the second women’s doubles combining with Carolina Kaiser to defeat Teoi and Tania Kirirua-Gill. The third set went to the Pointers 8/4 leaving the match score at 3 sets all with the mixed to play.

The first two mixed went the way of the Pointers giving them an unassailable lead on sets but a spirited 8-5 win by Kaiser and her partner over the Kirirua-Gill combination got Sacred Heart a point for winning on games.

Final score Nichols Point Starters 5 sets 55 games defeated Sacred Heart Starters 4 sets 58 games.

The SDTA will take a break this Saturday for the King’s Birthday long weekend but the traditional junior singles tournament hosted by Sacred Heart and St Andrews will take place at the Aero courts in Eleventh Street.
