Serving up regional success

TWENTY-two teams took to the Mildura Lawn Tennis Club Courts in glorious sunshine for round two of the winter Sunraysia District Tennis Association 2025 competition.

In what is becoming a much-loved tradition, all clubs play at the one venue to commence the season before spreading out to the individual clubs next week.

“It is such a great atmosphere,” said Robyn Herberte, the Association records officer, “and quite a spectacle to see all the courts in action.”

In a rematch of last season’s thrilling Div One final, Nichols Point Legends took on Sarnia Sloggers but the result was a much more one-sided affair.

Nichols Point’s women had a day out with Heather Olofsson and Cathryn Dawes not dropping a set.

A win in the mixed to Matt George and the evergreen Meredith Turner was a bright spot in an otherwise dark day for Sloggers.

Legends 8 sets, 76 games to Sloggers 2 sets, 36 games.

Red Cliffs Rebels sounded a warning to the rest of Div One with a 7 sets to 3 win over Sacred Heart Guns.

Young local star Jack Burford has returned to Red Cliffs this year after a couple of seasons with Nichols Point and carried over his excellent summer form to finish the match unbeaten, 24 games for and a miserly 5 against.

Rebels’ “Ms Reliable” Lisa Hill was the standout women performer, winning all her sets and only conceding 12 games.

Alcheringa Avengers had the bye this week and next week will travel interstate to play Nichols Point at their picturesque home location by the Riverside Golf Course.

A home ground advantage to the Pointers should mean a win, given their previous form.

Sarnia Sloggers will host Red Cliffs Rebels and without number one man Ryan Samaras, currently overseas on his honeymoon, the Sloggers look to be undermanned.

The return of Susan Green will bolster the Sarnia women but it still looks like a Rebels win.
