Heart teams out of luck

A WASH-out in the Division 3 clash between Sacred Heart Braves and Red Cliffs Ratbagz was the only thing that saved the Sacred Heart club from a whitewash in Round 13 of the Sunraysia District Tennis Association senior competition.

Sacred Heart Guns, who had topped the Division 1 table for much of the season, took a tumble to Red Cliffs Rebels.

The Rebels’ men – Kieran Mays, Paul Kealley and Reece Tiller – were unbeaten on the day and Red Cliffs’ Lisa Hill also proved indomitable as the Guns went down 8 sets to 2.

The Division 2 match was a closer affair but still left Sacred Heart winless on the day.

Wentworth Webels’ Jake Debrincat with a fine score of 24/13 was probably the difference on the day as Sacred Heart Starters lost 4 sets to 5, 51 games to 61.

Watch out anyone who has to play a Sacred Heart team next round as this proud club is sure to turn around its form.

A win for Sacred Heart was assured in the junior A grade competition as Sacred Heart Gold played off against Sacred Heart Green.

Standout player for the season Derek Bagacay continued his winning way for Gold with a 6-2 victory over Samar Warring.

Aaron Williams beat Nicola De Maria 6-1 to level for Green, while an emphatic 6-2 win for Onat Guzelburc and Tami Fanoiki over Nate Lawn and Mercedes Kaiser-Leal saw an early lead to Sacred Heart Green.

The sets kept going Green’s way as Guzelburc and Fanoiki won their respective singles 6-1 and 6-0.

Bagacay with the assistance of De Maria put a stop to the rot with a 6-1 defeat of Warring and Williams.

Gold was still in with a chance as Bagacay and Lawn combined well to beat Warring and Guzelburc 6-3 but any prospect of a come-from-behind win was snuffed out as Williams and Fanoiki held on for a 6-4 win over De Maria and Kaiser-Leal, giving Sacred Heart Green victory and bragging rights in the clubhouse.
