Avengers knock top Guns

SATURDAY was a day of mixed fortunes for Alcheringa Tennis Club in the Sunraysia District Tennis Association.

As predicted the previous week, Division 1 team Alcheringa Avengers have continued to wreak havoc on finals contenders with a big win over Sacred Heart Guns.

The top-placed Guns took a tumble to fourth position as the Avengers’ Cameron Phillips and Riley Afford were instrumental in their side’s seven sets to three win.

Sacred Heart’s ever-reliable Leanne Jordan was in all three sets the Guns won.

It was a strangely similar, if somewhat more expected scoreline in the Division 2 match between top-placed Alcheringa All Stars and cellar dwellers Sacred Heart Starters.

Alcheringa’s Reece Kurrle and Andrew Carlson carved up their opposition in a six sets to three win where Carolina Kaiser of the Starters was their only shining light.

Second-placed Alcheringa Almighties may have thought they were in for an easy day against second-last Sarnia Saints, but the closeness of the competition in Division 3 became apparent as the Saints’ blend of youth and experience won out, six sets to three.

Maree Moore and super sub Deb Martin were superb for Sarnia on the day as Alchie slipped to fourth on the ladder.

Ladder standings remained unchanged in Division 4. A meeting between third-placed Alcheringa Alfrescoes and second-placed St Andrews Almost Skilled could have been expected to be a close affair.

However, huge wins to Dale Irvin and Suzanne Hogg of St Andrews had the ledger well and truly in favour of Almost Skilled, as they took out the encounter six sets to three.
