Sunraysia district tennis round-up

A TIGHT clash between two Division 4 teams proved one of the highlights of Sunraysia District Tennis Association senior competition.

Sacred Heart Braves and Kenny Park Magpies traded blows all day, before Sacred Heart eventually drew clear to win 6 sets 51 games to the Magpies 3 sets 50 games.

Chris Hobart and Ethan Fox won a smashing tie-breaker set over Russell and Steve Bennett, while the Magpies’ Kristen Wade and Mandy Bone won the first ladies doubles 8-2 against Lyn Knowles and Jenny Fox.

The men split the remaining doubles, however the Braves women were just too strong winning the remaining doubles 8-3 and 8-0.

The mixed again decided the match. Sacred Heart stalwarts Knowles and Hobart put the match beyond doubt with an 8-3 win, and while not affecting the result, the final two mixed matches were played with enthusiasm.

In the third mixed, James Jervis and Sheryl Maddren won in a tie-breaker over Simon Stirrat and Kerri Weinert.

Hot Shots for beginners

DO you have a budding tennis star at your house?

This week, alongside the SDTA junior competition at the Aero courts in Eleventh Street, some excited beginners were taking part in the Hot Shots program with experienced Community Play coordinator Lisa Hill.

“Hot Shots is the perfect entry point for children aged 4 to 12 years to learn our wonderful game,” Hill said.

The sessions are held from 9-9.45am. Last weekend, children took part in a warm up, some hand-eye co-ordination drills and then learnt how to hit a modified ball, finishing the session with a fun game. All this is provided for $10 per week plus each participant receives a free Hot Shots t-shirt. Racquets can be provided.

For information or to register contact Lisa on 0400 726 824 or email lisa.joy.hill70@gmail.com
