A TRIO of life memberships have been awarded at the Mildura Lawn Tennis Club (MLTC) to long-time committee members.
Current president Reg Arney, Brenda Hornsby and Maree Moore were all given the honour last weekend, with an acknowledgement of their willingness to go above and beyond expectations for the club.
Arney has served in many roles within the club over decades, including men’s captain during 2008 and 2009, then taking on the presidency for 2010 and 2011.
Following that, he stayed on the general committee before being elected vice-president in 2018 and 2019 and again taking on the top job in 2020.
As well as being a hands-on president, Arney has been an “odd jobs man”, fixing any maintenance issues that arise, and during Easter tournaments and pro tour events he is always on hand the to sort out problems as well as complete the mundane but important tasks to keep everything running smoothly.
Current ladies’ captain Hornsby has also been a long-time member. She was captain in 2008 and 2009 and served on the committee between 2012 and 2014 before being re-elected captain the following year.
She has remained in that position since, and while it requires her to spend considerable time at the club, she is happy fill out competition and cards and help organise club championships.
Moore served as a junior captain of MLTC in 2008 and 2009 and has been on the committee for each years since then, bar one. During such time she has been club’s hall hire delegate and has trained with Tennis Australia to become an accredited linesperson and court supervisor.
She regularly travels to the Australian Open in Melbourne to work as a linesperson, and during the club’s Easter tournaments she has given up her days off to help monitor the courts, a requirement of Tennis Victoria.
Moore’s commitment to ensuring juniors could compete at various tournaments resulted in many success stories for the club’s younger players, something MLTC is thankful for.
Hornsby and Arney have also completed online training to become court monitors for local tournaments, which means a substantial saving for the club.
