McLean comes up aces in Red Cliffs Lawn Tennis Championships

PAIGE McLean reclaimed the Red Cliffs Annual Lawn Tennis Championship title for the third year running at the weekend.

McLean proved too strong for Alana Wall, winning 16/7.

In the men’s, it was an all Broken Hill affair in the championship final, with Patrick Reincke defeating Nathan Crabb 6-2.

Lisa and Eliza Hill took out the women’s doubles round robin on Saturday with Alana Wall and Renee Affleck coming in as runners-up.

Men’s championship doubles winners were Zac Galbraith and Nathan Swaeney (30), and second-place went to the men’s singles finalists, Nathan Crabb and Patrick Reincke (26).

Women’s singles winner McLean also won the mixed doubles championship event on Sunday with teammate Toby Galbraith (26/17), ahead of second place holders Blair Hahnel and Lisa Hill (25/13).

Hamish Inglis beat Andrew Molloy 6-1 in the men’s A-grade singles final, and Alison Johns (18/6) won the women’s competition against Katherine Smith.

Blair Hahnel and Paul Kealley (30/16) won the A-grade men’s doubles round robin on the second day of the tournament, and Grant Hancock and Matthew Hancock (28/19) were not far behind.

Chloe Williams and Lucy Sharp (18/5) won Saturday’s A-grade doubles, and Noni and Isabella Inglis (16/10) scored another placement for the family, as runners-up.

The Inglis family (24/16) added to their success in the A-grade mixed doubles event on Sunday with Hamish and Isabella beating second-placers Brent Byrnes and Steph Lines (20/15).

Timothy O’Neil and Andrew Molloy (22/15) won the men’s B-grade doubles with Len Poole and Dallas Kalms (20/14) in second.

Toby Howard and Alison Johns (24/10) won the mixed B-grade competition on Sunday, just ahead of Tatum and Crompton Cheryl (21/17).

Zac Galbraith and Reg Arney (18/10) won the men’s veteran’s A-grade twilight competition on Friday night, ahead of Nathan Crabb and Tim O’Neil (15/14).

Naomi Brown and Kylie Goulding (18/10) took out the A-grade veteran’s competition for the women, with Judy Stewart and Janet Cairns (16/8) in second.

The men’s A1-grade winners were Blair Hahnel and Grant Leyden (24), and runners-up were Brad Lever and Paul Kealley (22).

Daniel and Andrew Harbeger (23/16), won the B-grade twilight competition, and James Sharp and Jake Veal (22/13) came in second.

Last year’s men’s singles winner Xavier Kendall was unable to compete this year.

But there was still a big turn out with 86 individual tournament entries and close to 50 percent of players competing in more than one event.

Club president Gavin Lynch said “submissions surged” in the leadup to the weekend, after the easement of Victoria’s COVID-19 lockdown.

“The event went very well,” he said. “There was a fantastic atmosphere over the weekend and people played great tennis.

“It was a beautiful social event, especially in these COVID times.”

The club’s junior tournament is going ahead this weekend after being cancelled Valentine’s Day weekend due to COVID-19.
