Serving up a fine offer

GOOD on Mildura for putting its hand up and calling for a slice of the pie if Tennis Australia brings all its summer events to Victoria as planned.

There is still so much doubt over the Australian Open, which these tournaments would be a lead in to, and Mildura is hampered by only having grass courts when the Open is on hard courts but, in the current  climate, we need to make the noise.

At least advocating puts us on the radar.

If hard courts were to be installed at the Mildura Lawn Tennis Club, that’s a bonus for down the track and we can capitalise.

Tennis coach Bill Madafferi made solid points and, as long as the grass courts are still largely kept, we should be OK to lose a couple.

Then we can capitalise on everything great about Mildura – the weather, the ease of access by plane and so on.

If down the track we can get another big tournament here and the occasional big name, building on the Mildura Grand Tennis International, then how great would that be for the town?
