Winter tennis on schedule

WINTER tennis will go ahead as planned despite an increase in coronavrius cases in Victoria.

The Sunraysia District Tennis Association (SDTA) has confirmed matches will start on July 11 in all junior and senior grades.

There had been some concerns community sport may be affected by the recent increase in COVID-19 cases, but SDTA officials have been given the all-clear to start the season.

SDTA president Bill Madafferi admitted to being a little nervous last weekend when the Victorian Government announced they were delaying the easing of restrictions because of an increase in reported coronavirus cases.

“I must admit I was a little worried we might have to put things on hold again,” Madafferi said.

“But the information we have received is that we are right to go, which is great news for our tennis community.”

The SDTA will play a 10-round season, but there will be no finals with the premiership being awarded to the team which finishes on top of the ladder at the completion of the home-and-away rounds.

Madafferi said not all clubs would participate in this year’s competition with Kenny Park confirming they would not be entering a team and Wentworth also struggling for numbers.

But despite this, he expects most clubs to field strong sides across the different grades.

“We know this season is going to be a bit different to what we have been used to, but it’s about getting people out having a game of tennis,” Madafferi said.
