Uni cutback bounces Zac

SUNRAYSIA tennis player Zac Robinson’s senior year at college in the United States has been thrown into disarray after St Edward’s University cut its men’s tennis program.

Robinson is one of a number of athletes affected after the Texas college’s decision to cut six programs due to financial pressure arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Robinson is in the US as a recipient of the Lancaster Family Tennis Scholarship, which over the years has sent a selection of Sunraysia tennis players to college to further their careers and education.

At the end of the current semester the university is discontinuing men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf and men’s soccer.  The university’s vice-president for athletics Debbie Taylor said it was a sad situation.

“As we make this difficult transition, I know that all of our coaches and staff members have our student-athletes as a top priority and will work closely with them to support their needs,” she said.

All scholarship-eligible student-athletes impacted by this reduction will have their athletic scholarships honoured for the duration of their undergraduate enrolment at St. Edward’s.

Robinson, majoring in business administration, had a singles record of 15 wins and seven losses in singles and in doubles had a 13-7 record across his freshman, sophomore and junior years at St Edward’s.
