Schmidt to defend Ouyen crown

REIGNING men’s singles champion Dale Schmidt will return to defend his title this weekend at the annual Ouyen Lawn Tennis Club Labour Day tournament.

Schmidt, who has strong connections to the Mallee, will travel from Melbourne for the event.

Last year was his first appearance at the tournament, winning the final in straight sets against Liam Galbraith, 6-3, 7-6.

However, former local and multiple winner Josh Gregg will miss out because of football commitments in Darwin.

Tournament organisers had hoped Gregg would attend this year’s event after missing 2019 because of another commitment.

The three-day tournament hits off on Saturday with men’s and women’s singles being played across all grades.

There will be plenty of entertainment across the three days with live music on Sunday and the popular chook raffle.

Entries are still open and you can enter through the club’s website.
