Country tennis players converge on Mildura’s world-class lawn courts

MILDURA Lawn Tennis Club (MLTC) will host over 250 players and their families at next year’s inter-regional country championships.

The three-day event, which brings players from 11 Victorian country tennis regions, is set to be a financial boost for the regional economy.

“Hosting events of this calibre in our region is not only great for the growth of tennis in our district, but provides a welcome boost to our economy with the influx of visitors during our busy January holiday period,” Mildura councillor Helen Healy said.”It’s a privilege for our region to host such a prestigious and historic event.

“It’s testament to the hard work of Mildura Lawn Tennis Club members, who put in an amazing amount of work to produce some of the best grass courts anywhere in the country.”

It will be the 64th time the historic Tennis Victoria event has been held, catering for players from under 12 through to over 50.

Tournament director Shelly Hart described the event as unique, with a variety of formats including junior and senior mixed doubles.

“Beautiful Mildura will be the focal point for country tennis in January when the 64th inter-regional country championships takes to the world-class grass courts,”she said.

“This is such a wonderful opportunity to represent a team. It’s also extremely social off court with time for players to catch up with their opponents in between matches creating a friendly atmosphere. Players really look forward to coming back each year and playing in this event.”

MLTC president Chris Hobart said he was looking forward to welcoming players and officials to show off all that Sunraysia has to offer, on and off the court.

“I would like to encourage as many of our regional cousins to get involved in the inter-regional country championships in the new year,” Hobart said.

“We are looking forward to hosting players from all over regional Victoria, showcasing our spectacular lawn courts and our beautiful location overlooking the mighty Murray River.”

The three day event will commence on January 3.
