Extra weight sinks Cookes

UNDEFEATED Weightman’s Packaging continuing on their winning way, while Choices Flooring Mildura made it two wins in a row as Mallee Bearings climbed to second place in round 6 of Sunraysia Table Tennis Summer Pennant.

Just one win separates second to sixth on the ladder in what is proving a close, hard-fought competition.

By winning three singles Wayne Carmichael led Weightman’s Packaging to a solid 7-4 victory over Cookes Pools & Spas, who despite this loss hold fourth spot.

Carmichael’s teammates Russell Walder and Lee Leeson won singles each to offer sound support, as well as teaming with Carmichael to win both doubles.

For Cookes, Mark Dorman continued his consistent season, again winning two singles for the fifth time, while Dylan Wood also won two matches using his strong forehand.

Choices Flooring were winless two rounds ago, and with their 7-4 victory over Tankard Dental, they will go into their next match full of confidence.

Reece Kurrle was in good form, winning two singles and taking part in both doubles victories, however the matchwinner was their No.3.

Daniel Jansen won two singles, the first against opposing No.2 Paul Kealley in a marathon five-setter after trailing one game to two, 11-7, 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8, and later he outlasted in-form youngster Jamie Kealley, who earlier had his best win in this pennant by defeating opposing captain Reece Kurrle in another five-set slog.

Jansen survived three match points in the fifth to defeat Kealley in a tremendous contest, 11-7, 6-11, 11-9, 13-15, 13-11.

After winning two of their first three matches, Tankards have now lost their past three.

With a 7-4 victory over Regional Taxation Services, Mallee Bearings edged ahead of their opponents on the ladder, albeit by percentage.

Bearings skipper Jackson Tung continued his good form, winning three singles including a lengthy five-set match against Kate Carmichael, 10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 12-14, 11-3.

In the fourth game spectators witnessed a rare shot by Carmichael, who attempted a backhand retrieve to a high ball, only to miss the ball completely, but then had time to swat an unorthodox forehand for a winner, much to Tung’s dismay.

Jackson Murphy filling in for Mallee Bearings played a key role in his team’s victory by winning two singles and partnering Tung to a win in the first doubles.
