Tables turned in family feud

ROUND 3 of Sunraysia Table Tennis again featured close matches, with all decided by a 6-5 scoreline.

This could have been titled the family round with brothers playing each other and on the same table, mother and son in opposite teams.

On another table, another brother versus brother singles took place along with an uncle versus niece match also played.

The highlight match of the night was between brothers Dylan and Liam Wood, who play for Mallee Bearings and Weightman’s Packaging respectively.

This was a must-watch contest which went to five sets and contained some outstanding rallies.

Younger brother Dylan after survived match points in the fourth raced to a 7-1 lead in the fifth and it looked like the result was decided, but in an amazing comeback Liam levelled the match at 10 all.

In a tense finish, Dylan was able to regroup for an amazing win against his older brother, 11-7 8-11 7-11 16-14 12-10.

Mallee Bearing’s skipper Joel Thomas was again instrumental in his team grabbing the four points as he won three singles as well as taking part in both doubles’ victories.

The first doubles was in the balance when Weightman’s Jackson Tung and Dylan Wood took a 2-1 lead over Thomas and Liam Wood however the latter combination were able to steady going on to win 11-8 7-11 8-11 11-5 11-7.

For Weightman’s, Tung and Dylan Wood each won two singles, while Lee Leeson outlasted the in-form Daniel Jansen in three sets. The doubles proved to be the difference.

Going into their match, both Tankard Dental and Regional Taxation Services were fighting it out for their first victory and in the end it was Tankards who took the points 6-5, despite RTS number two Rohan Reimers winning three singles.

The match was close throughout, with the five set singles between Tankard’s Thahn Nguyen and RTS number three Edi Re being decisive with Nguyen hanging on to win 12-10 11-7 7-11 9-11 11-5.

For the victors, Reece Kurrle won two singles, as did the in-form Paul Kealley, who is showing better form than his number three ranking suggests. The doubles were shared.

In a further 6-5 result, Cookes Pools & Spas won their first match of the season, defeating the previously undefeated Choices Flooring Mildura.

Choices skipper Wayne Carmichael continued his unbeaten singles run, racing through his three matches in comfortable style

An unusual statistic for Carmichael was that he played in two losing doubles which proved to be the difference between victory and defeat.

Teammate Leon Brown gave his bes,t winning two singles in five sets over Cookes fill-in Gavin Carmichael and Russell Walder respectively.

Against Carmichael, Brown looked down and out when he trailed 3-7 and then 8-10 in the fifth, but a strong finish saw Brown take the fifth 12-10.

Earlier against Kate Carmichael, Brown started well in each game but could not maintain the pressure as Kate finished the second and third games in strong style.

In the second, she was able to win seven of eight points at the end and when trailing 6-1 in the third, she rattled off ten points in succession.

Kate won two singles and took part in both doubles victories to play a big part in her team’s first victory of the season. Teammates Russell Walder and Gavin Carmichael won a singles each.
