Carmichael bounces back

ALL six teams in Sunraysia Table Tennis pennant remain in contention for a finals berth with three rounds remaining.

In round seven matches ladder leader Cookes Pools & Spas slipped to second when soundly defeated by Mallee Bearings, who now occupy the top spot by one win.

Bearings skipper Wayne Carmichael, after suffering his first singles loss for the season last round, bounced back strongly to win three singles, however, it was teammate Reece Kurrle who again starred winning three singles for the second week in succession.

His victory over Kate Carmichael was commendable given his slow start, Kurrle winning a thriller 5-15, 15-12, 18-16.

If Kurrle can maintain this form, Mallee Bearings will be difficult to handle.

The score line of 8-3 looked to be one-sided, however, there were five three set matches with four going the way of Mallee Bearings.

Max Miller Carpets, after trailing 2-4 and later 3-5, stormed home to defeat Regional Taxation Services 6-5 in a thriller.

At five-all, Carpeters’ fill-in Shane Carmichael snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when he recovered from a 10-14 deficit in the third against Sony Sefer to win 15-10, 9-15, 17-15.

This was an excellent team effort with Arhuang Lau, Liam Wood and Carmichael winning three, two and one singles respectively.

After being defeated soundly 0-11 in round one of this competition, the Carpeters have recovered to win four of their next six matches and now occupy third position on the ladder. Lau and Wood are in excellent form and the team is building at the right time.

Weightmans Packaging recorded a much-needed win when they defeated Tankard Dental 8-3.

Mark Dorman was in fine form for Weightmans winning three singles while teammates Gavin Carmichael and Russell Walder won two and one singles respectively.

There were six three-set matches played with Weightmans winning five.

Dorman won two important three setters firstly outlasting Rohan Reimers.

In the third set Dorman trailed 8-10 as Reimers looked to pounce, however, the experienced Dorman then won the next seven points to win 14-16, 15-11, 15-10 in an entertaining match.

Later Dorman recovered after losing the first game against Thanh Nguyen before again lifting his game to win 13-15, 15-9, 15-12 a game of great concentration from both players.

Dorman was the key in his team gaining the four points.
