Ljubic and Nguyen in top form for RTS

PLAY has resumed in the Sunraysia table-tennis pennant after the school holiday break, with round five matches taking place.

With both Matt Ljubic and number two Thahn Nguyen in top form, winning three singles each, Regional Taxation Services proved too steady for opponents Weightmans Packaging, winning 7-4.

Ljubic and Nguyen teamed together to win the first doubles to cap off a successful night. This was Nguyen’s best performance in pennant one defeating three difficult opponents and in doing so assisted his team to consolidate second position on the ladder.

Ladder leaders Mallee Bearings had their hands full against the winless Max Miller Carpets.

The contest featured five five-set games.

In an even team display the Bearings trio of Gavin Carmichael, Mark Dorman and Rohan Reimers won three, two and one singles respectively to keep their unbeaten run intact.

Dorman scored an important win late in the match when playing Leon Brown, Dorman took the first 11-8, however, Brown raced through the second 11-3.

Dorman fought hard to take the third 12-10 and when he trailed Brown 5-9 in the fourth it looked like another five setter, however, Dorman showing real experience worked his was back to frustrate Brown and win the fourth 12-10.

The doubles were shared, both decided 11-9 in the fifth.

The Carpeters showed good glimpses of form and could be considered unlucky. Kate Carmichael won two singles recovering from two sets to love down to defeat Rohan Reimers in five sets and for the second time this season she was defeated 11-9 in the fifth by father Gavin in a thriller.

In a solid display, Cookes Pools & Spas proved too strong for Tankard Dental winning 8-3. Joel Thomas was in fine form winning three singles and in partnership with teammates Lee Leeson and Russell Walder, Cookes tasted success in both doubles. Walder also won two singles and Leeson one to complete a good night for Cookes who occupy third on the ladder one win clear of fourth.
