Something for everyone

The magic of creating something special from a tiny block of clay is what keeps Sarah Yorston inspired. The young mother shares with Caitlyn Morgan how her own love for earrings became a creative hobby. Pictures: Louise Barker

WHEN Sarah Yorston plans her outfit for each day, she is never without a pair of earrings.

While working as a nurse, Sarah was limited to what jewellery she could wear, she found earrings could give her outfit “something extra”.

“I am a real earring person, I don’t wear a lot of bracelets or necklaces,” she says.

“I just love earrings. I have always loved them and I think being a nurse and knowing you can’t wear anything else, it give you that something extra.

“Even the little studs can make you feel nice and earring suit everyone, they don’t exclude anybody.”

While working as a nurse in the emergency department, Sarah found herself looking for a hobby to de-stress at home and with creativity in her genes, turning to jewellery making was no surprise.

“My mum has always been creative, we lived on a farm and she would always recycle materials and my sister is also very creative, she is a graphic designer and often makes beautiful clothes,” Sarah says.

“Working in the emergency department as a nurse can be a high stress job so creating earrings was a way to de-stress.

“I started off making fabric earrings, then I began playing around with polymer clay.

“There is a lot of trial and error when using clay.

“A lot of it has been self-taught with YouTube a great place to look things up.

“I had to trial five to seven types of glues and I gave a lot away to friends to trial at the beginning.”

When she finally found what worked and what didn’t, her hobby quickly turned into her business, BLUEY.

“It did take me a while to decide what I wanted to do, I have a couple of different styles and don’t like to put myself into a box,” Sarah says.

“Initially I just sold them to friends at work and I just make them because I love it, I enjoy it so much.

“I find the clay very forgiving, you can do lots with it. It’s so versatile and while it’s a really saturated market, there is always different things people are doing.

“Creating is endless, people are only limited by their imagination.”
