One item many ways

If you’re looking to breathe new life into your wardrobe, we’ve got you covered. Ashlee Falvo tested some of the most popular fashion hacks that promise to elevate the existing items in your wardrobe to new heights, with surprising results. Here’s to never uttering the dreaded words ‘I have nothing to wear!’ again! Pictures: Carmel Zaccone

1 – Button up shirt as a skirt

This one has been doing the rounds of the internet for a while now, and after trying it out for ourselves, the review is in – it works! The idea is that you button the shirt up, step into it, tuck in the collar, wrap the arms around your waist and voila – a skirt! Personally, I’d wear it as a high-waisted skirt rather than having it sit low on the hips, but have a play with it and see what suits you. Try buttoning the shirt unevenly, so that it sits higher on one side. Throw it over your bathers and pair it with a hat for the perfect easy poolside look this summer.

2 – Tie up an oversized shirt to make a crop

Crops are oh so on trend right now, and let’s face it, here in the sweltering Mallee heat we’re all looking for ways to keep cool while looking chic. If you have a tee that’s just too big and you’ve been wearing it to bed as a nightie, give it new life by bunching it up and tying it into a knot – voila, instant cropped tee! Try knotting to the side or at the back depending on what bottoms you’re wearing. Roll up the sleeves until they sit on top of your shoulders for a touch of rock glam.

3 – Silk scarves – not just for your neck

I cannot resist a good scarf. Something about the array of prints and colours available out there makes me want to buy every one that I see – never mind the fact that no matter how I try to actually wear them around my neck, I wind up looking like a flight attendant. Never fear, there’s a way to show off your scarf collection – wind them up and wrap them into a headscarf! My personal fave way of doing this is into a low bun, teamed with the biggest gold hoops I can find ala Alicia Keys. Added hint – tie a silk scarf to your handbag for a cute personal touch.

4 – Peek-a-boo jeans

Ripped jeans are a staple in many wardrobes, and rightly so. They add a touch of rock and roll to any outfit. But what happens when over time the strategic rips become full-blown holes? Don’t turf your fave ripped denim items, just wear a pair of lace stockings or tights underneath to add a bit of peek-a-boo primp and cover any skin that’s exposed a bit too much! You can also cut them into shorts, and keep the raw edge hem for a rustic look.

5 – Parka as a dress

If you have an oversized winter parka, try zipping or buttoning it up all the way and wrapping a skinny belt around your waist – hey presto, you have a dress! This works best if the parka is made of a lighter material, and falls just below the knee. Team with ankle boots or Converse all stars for a street edge and a twist on your winter classics.
