Waters sets Bathurst record

TICKFORD racing’s Cameron Waters has secured pole for Sunday’s Bathurst 1000 with the fastest-ever time set in a Top 10 Shootout at Mount Panorama.

His 2:03.5592 put him a remarkable 0.4429 seconds clear of the season’s soon-to-be Scott McLaughlin, beating former teammate Chaz Mostert’s lap record in the process.

“Man I’m so pumped, that was absolutely awesome, so much fun,” Waters told supercars.com

“I made a bit of a mistake at The Dipper but who cares, I had fun doing that!

“I knew the markers I had to hit and just went and did it. I knew we’d go a fair bit quicker than practice and I gave it everything.”

Sunday’s race will be the final race of the 2020 season, with Waters third in the driver’s standings.

Water’s livery for the “great race” includes the “Mildura” tourism logo.

Rick Kelly the other local driver in the event, will race in his twentieth Bathurst tomorrow. Kelly qualified nineteenth and will share his drive in the Castrol car 15 with Dale Wood.

“The big negative of today is we’re not in the shootout, but that brings with it a positive in that we’re able to shift our focus completely to the race and that’s everything from car setup, fuel economy, driver changes, pit stops and we had a good day getting all of that stuff sorted and also seeing what we’re going to do with strategy,” Kelly said.

“It’s been a really productive day, we’ve still got some work to do but overall I think that will put us in a good position for tomorrow for the big race.”
