Mildura disability crossings near completion

THE last of three disability-accessible pedestrian crossings planned for Deakin Avenue is almost complete.

Two crossings, between Thirteenth and Fifteenth streets, have been completed and the final crossing expected to be finished next week.

The works are part of a $3 million safety boost in Sunraysia, of which $2.1 million is funded by the Transport Accident Commission and the Victorian Government.

A Mildura Council spokesperson said the crossings were installed to assist pedestrians crossing the south end of Deakin Avenue, particularly those with prams, or people riding mobility scooters.

“With only traffic lights at the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Street intersections, as well as the pedestrian crossing near Mildura Central, there are significant distances between crossing locations,” the spokesperson said.

“In addition, the kerb within the centre median is also high and difficult to step over.

“As a result, motorised scooters tend to ride on the road at the centre median vehicle cut-throughs.

“Having motorised scooters riding on the road at these locations is high-risk for the user and people with prams might struggle with the high kerbs and crossing the grass.”

Other works completed as part of the safety push include roundabouts at the intersections of Ontario Avenue and Thirteenth and Twelfth streets, 40km/h zones in 21 residential streets and zebra crossings at the Ontario Avenue medical precinct.

Timed 40km/h zones in Ontario Avenue and Thirteenth street are also planned.
