Capacity fields hit the course at Coomealla Golf Club

COOMEALLA Golf Club has seen a sharp increase in numbers since a ban on playing golf was lifted by the NSW Government early last week.

Saturday’s competition saw a capacity field of over 110 players take part and club representative Paul Scott said the trend continued yesterday with big numbers turning out again.

“We have certainly seen plenty of people back playing golf,” Scott said.

“Normally our Saturday and Sunday competitions are pretty strong, but we had a lot more social players over the weekend.”

The NSW Office of Sport advised clubs of their decision to reverse a ban on all competition and social golf last Monday.

Courses were forced to close last month after strict new guidelines were put in place to try and curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But after reconsideration by the Office of Sport, clubs were advised that golf is considered an activity and can be played in line with the public health orders relating to public gathering limits, social distancing and the elderly.

Coomealla and Wentworth are the only two clubs in the Sunraysia region which remain open to the public.

All clubs across the border in Victoria have been forced to close as part of the strict new social distancing laws put in place by the State government.

Scott said he encouraged anyone wanting to play golf at Coomealla over the coming weeks to book a tee time.

“We have obviously put some guidelines in place to ensure we are abiding by the social distancing rules in place,” Scott said.

“Most people have been really good about things, but from a club’s point of view it makes it a lot easier if people book a tee time, particularly social players.”

Coomealla Golf club will be open every day this week, including over the Easter break.
