Squash club seeks new faces

THE Mildura Squash Club is offering free casual sessions on Mondays to new players who are interested in taking up the game.

Often regarded as one of the most physically demanding sports at the top level, squash in Sunraysia peaked in popularity in the 80s, but is expecting a resurgence over coming years.

Player numbers increased upon the opening of four new courts at Mildura Sporting Precinct late last year, and the sport will make its Summer Olympics debut in Los Angeles in 2028.

Club committee member Wayne Sparks said this week was as good as any to give the sport a go.

“We’ve just wrapped up our winter pennant, and are taking a week’s break before launching into our spring competition,” he said.

“This is a perfect opportunity for new people to come along, see the facilities and learn all about our great game.

“We play right through to December, so if you’re in your off-season for your primary sport and want to keep fit, I can’t think of a better option than squash.”

Walk ins are welcome on Mondays between 6pm and 7.30pm, when club members usually come down to hone their skills.

The club is hoping to bring more junior and female players into the mix.

First timers are welcome to come along for a free session, with equipment and coaching provided by club members.

“The offer’s out there for any new or returning players, any age or skill level, the more the merrier,” Mr Sparks said.

“We’ll provide the racquets, balls and glasses people need, all people need bring is themselves.

“Our sport might be the best kept secret of the sporting precinct, but it’s definitely not exclusive, we want as many people joining in on the fun as possible.”

Alongside casual hits with club members on Mondays, spots are still being determined for the upcoming Division 2 and Division 1 pennant competitions, which run on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

“The great thing about squash is it’s a team sport with individual results, it’s great for fitness, hand-eye coordination and tactical thinking,” Mr Sparks said.

“We’re still finalising numbers and teams for our next pennant, so if people were interested in joining in on the upcoming season, they need to let us know quickly.

“The best way to do so is to come down and have a hit or get in touch with the Mildura Squash Facebook page.”

Mildura Squash’s free come-and-try sessions are held at the squash courts at Mildura Sporting Precinct, from 6pm to 7.30pm on Mondays.
