Saints claim minor flag in win over Lions

UNBEATEN Bambill emphatically sealed the MFNL A Grade minor premiership after blowing away presumed challengers Cardross at the Mildura Senior College courts last Saturday.

With four games left to play, the Saints have a 16-point break over the second-placed Lions and a massive goal advantage.

However, things are getting curiouser and curiouser in the battle to make the top four with a quartet of teams chasing the other three spots.

Meringur made the biggest move at the weekend when they shocked third-placed Werrimull at the Lake and are now just a game outside the four.

The Kangaroos, after a shaky start which saw them down by three goals at quarter-time, turned up the defensive heat in the second and third quarters and held the Magpies to 10 goals in that span while scoring 20 of their own in an impressive 39-32 triumph.

Defender Madelyn McPhee was outstanding for the Roos along with consistent shooter Emily Birch and Jessica Tiller.

A win for the Pies would have seen them leap to second but now they are looking over their shoulders at fast-finishing Nangiloc, who are just a game behind them in fourth.

Brooke Watson, Cassie Morris and Erin Sell made Werrimull’s best list and the Magpies are still likely to make finals, but they have become just that bit more vulnerable.

Red-hot Nangi made it five wins from six games when they beat bottom side Gol Gol by 37 goals at home.

The Demons were in total command from the start and led at every change in the 64-27 rout.

Regular performer Amber King, playing coach Ginine Sluiter and Sienna Charles were named the top Demons in the defending champs’ most dominant win of the season.

In arguably their worst loss of the season, Emily Phillips, Jarae Johnson and Abbey Curran battled hard for the one-win Hawks.

At the college, Bambill taught Cardy a netball lesson. Behind at quarter-time, the Saints exploded with 18 goals in the second term to burst the game open and then finished with a 19-goal fourth to cruise home 62-36.

Veteran Breigh Hammet was in fine form along with Maddy Tormey and Kaylie Monaghan for the 10-0-1 Saints while Bronte Burgess, Lily Thompson and shooter Tamara Hamence had their moments for the Lions.
