Kangaroos in fight for top four

TOP sides Bambill, Cardross and Werrimull should coast further away from the chasing A Grade pack in this weekend’s Millewa Football Netball League action.

Oddly enough, among the three, undefeated Bambill may face the toughest challenge against a tricky Meringur squad which is just hanging in the top four.

Co-coaches Bella Connell and Susie Wilson lead a feisty Kangaroo mob which includes winger Christina Villiva and Madelyn McPhee.

They went down last week to a revived Nangiloc side, which is snapping at their heels, but have proved to be relatively resilient over the first half of the season.

Ladder leaders Bambill, whose only dropped points of the season came in a tie with second-placed Cardross, were pushed all the way last week by Werrimull before emerging with a five-goal win.

Maddy Tormey, Ebony Roberts and Kaylie Monaghan were the top Saints on the day, but the premiership favourites can’t afford any letdowns at the Lake.

At Cardross, the host’s match-up with Nangiloc also looks quite intriguing.

The Lions comfortably accounted for Gol Gol by 18 goals last week to improve their record to 5-2-1 and centre Bronte Burgess, goal shooter Tamara Hamence and Gypsy Gange were in prime form, but after a less than stellar start to the season, reigning premiers Nangy are starting to find their feet.

Ginine Sluiter’s side got by Meringur last week to notch up win number two and the Demons are now lurking just a game outside the top four.

The coach regularly features among the team’s best along with Amber King and Tamara Loveridge and the last thing the ‘big three’ would like to see is the Dees squeak into the top four.

Meanwhile, Werrimull should return to winning form when they cross the river to meet bottom side Gol Gol.

The Magpies gave ladder leaders Bambill an almighty fright last week before a last quarter fade which saw them concede 13 goals while managing only four of their own.

Star centre Erin Sell, playing coach Jolene Neyland and Maddison Maher were the Pies’ standouts and they should have little trouble ruffling the Hawks’ feathers.

Gol Gol have a win to their name this season and Jarae Johnson, Sarah Moyle and Maka Clarke are regularly on their best list, but they will have to wait a while longer for victory No 2.

PREDICTIONS: Saints by nine goals, Lions by 11, Magpies by 15
