Saints rise to Magpies challenge

MFNL A Grade ladder leaders Bambill were given quite a fright at the Mildura Senior College courts on Saturday before prevailing over Werrimull and extending their lead at the top to eight points.

The Magpies were ahead by four goals going into the final term before the Saints rallied for a hard-fought 42 to 37 win.

Maddy Tormey, Ebony Roberts and Kaylie Monaghan were the Bambill players who came to the fore when it mattered most while midcourter Erin Sell was again outstanding for the Pies along with coach and shooter Jolene Neyland and Maddison Maher.

Cardross’s impressive form continued as they had little trouble dispatching Gol Gol at home.

The Hawks trailed the Lions by only a goal at halftime, but then Cardross clicked in the second half to run away to a 54-36 triumph.

The four points gained saw Cardy leapfrog Werrimull into second place on the table.

Centre Bronte Burgess and shooter Tamara Hamence were again dominant for the Lions along with Gypsy Gange.

Jarae Johnson, Maka Clarke and Sarah Moyle played well for the Hawks who sit at the bottom of the standings but are better than their 1-7 record suggests.

In the third game basically dormant MFNL A Grade premiers Nangiloc started to to stir into action.

A win over fourth-placed Meringur may not look all that impressive on face value, but bear in mind that victory has put the Demons within striking distance of the top four and also taking into account the Dees charged from third to the pennant last year and that should have the other teams ahead of them on the ladder looking over their shoulders.

This is a radically different outfit from one which clinched the crown, but coach Ginine Sluiter finally has her new crew moving in the right direction.

Out at the Lake, Nangy jumped to an early 12-8 lead and extended that at each break to run out comfortable 56-40 victors and improve their record to 2-6. Not brilliant, but only a win behind the Kangaroos and with a far superior goal difference.

Amber King and Tamara Loveridge have had impressive seasons in a thus far uninspiring run and they were again named among Nangiloc’s best along with Sluiter.

Winger Christina Villiva, Madelyn McPhee and co-coach Bella Connell stood out for Meringur, but they must be feeling the heat to hold on to fourth.
