Werrimull move up after win over Meringur

WERRIMULL pulled off a comfortable victory over Meringur in horrid conditions at the Lake on Saturday to advance to second on the MFNL A Grade netball ladder.

Wind is a shooter’s worst enemy, and it blew up in spades during the encounter and things weren’t helped by rain, but that didn’t stop the Magpies from putting on an impressive display in front of some very hardy fans.

Werrimull held a four-goal lead at the first break and extended that to a match defining 10 at the half on their way to a final 42-25 tally against the finals hopefuls, who are still comfortably in fourth.

Regular Magpie stars, centre Erin Sell, coach Jolene Neyland and Chelsea Newey, again shone for the victors while Emily Birch, Madelyn McPhee and Zannah Harmer were named the Kangaroos’ best.

The Pies (5-2) leapfrogged Cardross on the table and have set up an intriguing round eight clash with undefeated ladder leaders Bambill at Mildura Senior College this weekend.

With split round six finally in the bag – following the previous week’s round seven, Meringur (3-4) return to the Lake to do battle with last year’s champions Nangiloc, who only have one win to their name after seven games.

Round eight’s other game sees impressive Cardross (4-2-1) host bottom placed Gol Gol (1-6).
