Magpies, Kangaroos to do battle

LIKELY finalists Werrimull and Meringur travel down to the Lake today for a clash which could go some way to shaping the MFNL’s A Grade top four.

A win for the “hosting” Magpies and they would leapfrog Cardross into second place on the ladder – just six points behind undefeated Bambill.

The Kangaroos could also make significant gains with a victory as they would pull level with the Pies on the ladder, but with a significant goal differential deficit.

Werrimull flexed their muscles last week with a tough three-goal win over the Lions, also at the Lake, and at 4-2 are starting to look like the team which finished runners-up last year after an impressive 12-2-1 regular season.

Pies centre Erin Sell has been a driving force for the team in 2025 along with Chelsea Newey, Anna Thomson, Maddison Maher and coach Jolene Neyland, who are regularly named among the side’s best on court.

Meringur had a somewhat easier time of it last weekend, accounting for bottom side Gol Gol by nine goals in a low-scoring encounter across the river.

The Kangas missed finals action last year but look well set for post-season play in 2025.

Co-coaches Bella Connell and Susie Wilson have sparked the revival – on and off the court – along with Madelyn McPhee and centre courter Christina Villiva, whose move over from Cardross in the offseason has already paid significant dividends.

Meringur are just a victory away from matching their win total of last season (four), but they may have to wait another week.

PREDICTION: Magpies by seven goals
