Roos’ put power on full display

IT was just another pleasant Saturday stroll for Wentworth’s SFNL A Grade netballers as the rampant ladder leaders demolished Imperials by 42 goals at the Brian Weightman Oval courts.

The sun was out, there was a pleasant breeze to cool things down, Amanda Edwards scored 49 goals, which keeps her on target for about 800 or so, give or take, this regular season – ho-hum.

The Roos’ “smallest” margin of victory so far this A Grade campaign has been 39 against premiers Ouyen United in the Kangas own backyard in round one, so just how do you improve on near perfection?

“There’s still plenty for us to learn,” goal shooter supreme and coach Edwards said.

“I thought we couldn’t get real good flow on at times. So, it’s just going back and being patient in those moments when we can’t play our game and look at where we can change it so that we can build back into that flow again.”

As is the norm, Wenty won basically every position in the 30 to 72 outcome.

“Defensively I thought the girls worked really hard today … Georgia Chase was amazing in wing defence, and it was great to see Christie Becker back on court. She has come back from surgery … it was ground zero for her today,” Edwards said.

One close tussle was the match-up between star centres Ash Cameron and Tracey Sherlock.

“Tracey Sherlock in the middle is elite, and I thought she matched Ash really well today,” Edwards said.

“It was fun seeing them battle it out all over the court.

“Imperials are so strong and fit and definitely improving.”

That’s some consolation for Imps coach Ali Walker.

“I’m happy with how the girls played,” Walker said. “I thought they went out and tried hard.

“We know Wentworth are the benchmark and that they can get a lot of goals in a quarter.

“The aim was to focus on each quarter and keep them below 20.

They got 19 in the first and then the message was: let’s try to keep them under that every other quarter.

“It wasn’t about trying to win the game. We know they are a step above in A Grade.

“It was about trying to win some parts of the game, and I thought defensively Kia (Scott) and Maggie (Monaghan) got key touches and put some pressure on and slowed it down a little bit through that back end.

“Ella (Hards) and Meg (McManus) got some good turnovers through the middle.

“The girls didn’t drop their heads and kept fighting, so there were lots of positives to take from the game.”
