Saints’ strong start continues

BAMBILL’S hot start to the 2025 MFNL A Grade netball season continued at the weekend with a relatively comfortable seven-goal victory over long-time rivals Werrimull at the Lake courts.

Leading by a goal at halftime, the Saints took charge in the third quarter with a 10 goals to four effort and maintained that margin until the final horn.

At 3-0, Bambill stand alone at the top of the standings, just clear of Meringur and Cardross at 2-1, and appear keen to atone for the late fade last year which saw the minor premiers exit the finals in straight sets.

Maddy Tormey, who has been in fine form early this season, was again among the Saints’ best along with Erin Hird and Kaylie Monaghan, while Erin Sell led the way for the Pies along with Jolene Neyland and Grace Kelly.

Improving Meringur maintained their place in the top four with an eight-goal away win over struggling defending champions Nangiloc.

Only two goals separated the teams at three-quarter time, but the Kangaroos extended that lead with a 12 goals to six final quarter and piled more pain on the now 0-3 Demons.

Christina Villiva was again among the visitors’ best along with Madelyn McPhee and Zannah Harmer.

Demons coach, and one of the few holdovers from last year’s premiership side, Ginine Sluiter again led from the front along with consistent performers Amber King and Annette Emonson, but frustration must be creeping in at Nangy.

Cardross had the least troublesome day as they led from the start at Gol Gol and were comfortably in charge by 11 goals at halftime.

The Hawks fought back in the third, but the Lions rallied to end up 48-38 victors. They will be looking forward to hosting the struggling Demons this week.

Tamara Hamence, another player off to a good start in 2025, was best on court with teammates Geordia Leutner and Charlotte McKendrick providing great support.

Emily Phillips, Jarae Johnson and Sarah Moyle were chosen the top Hawks.
