Edwards sends signal in grand final rematch

WENTWORTH flexed their might in a dominant 68 to 29 win over a very different looking Ouyen United Kangas on a scorching day at Blackburn Park in Ouyen.

The 2024 SFNL A Grade grand final rematch saw the Roos come out very business-like in the first half, brushing the Kangas aside with power for a massive lead 36 to 9 lead at half-time.

Wentworth coach Amanda Edwards shot 26 goals in the first half and finished with 47 for the game.

The Roo’s defence was excellent in the first half with Natalie Vercher and Courtney Wakefield leading the way.

Kelsey Cameron led the way in the midcourt as Wentworth were relentless in their pressure.

The loss ends the Kangas’ winning streak at nine games as they found form at the end of last season.

Kangas’ coach Kyra Nathan was pragmatic post-game.

“It was a tough game, and we knew it was going to be tough,” said she said.

“We were missing a few players, particularly at the defensive end, which meant it was always going to be hard match up with the height of Amanda and Lola (McInerny).

“We were a lot better in the second half and started to get the ball back and adjusted how we moved the ball.”

Nathan experimented with her combinations, as teenagers Sienna Hulland, Lucy O’Shannessy (first full A Grade game) and Maddi Plant got some time on court against the very best.

Catherine Brown was the main focal point for the Kangas, scoring 25 goals, while Ellen Morrish was in the best for Ouyen in wing and goal defence.
