Team Tonga on top

MORE than 20 local netballers recently got to represent not only Sunraysia but their native Tonga at the Netball Pacific Cup.

The Tonga under-15 and under-18 mixed teams, which both comprised players from Mildura and Robinvale, were the champions of their respective age divisions at the competition, and helped Tonga to claim the overall competition win.

The Netball Pacific Cup tournament gives Victorian netballers the opportunity to represent their native countries, with teams from Australia, Cook Island, Fiji, Samoa, New Zealand, Nuie and Tonga all competing against one another.

Supportive netball mum Selu Burton said this was the second time they had taken local teams to the competition, and they were stoked to come away as champions.

“Everyone was so glad that they got to represent Tonga,” she said.

“We wore our (native) colours, red and white.”

Ms Burton thanked all those who helped the teams to travel and stay in Melbourne for the competition, and said they were already talking about going back to back as reigning premiers.

“We are hoping to go again next year,” she said.
