Roos pick up pieces with B Grade crown

WENTWORTH’S B Grade claimed a back-to-back premiership over Robinvale-Euston, giving the Roos a much-needed boost to morale after a deflating result in the A Grade just an hour before.

While there were only five goals separating the two sides at the end of three quarters, the Roos found another level in the final 15 minutes which the Eagles could not match, with the final scoreline blowing out to 47-28.

Roos coach Natalie Vercher said she was “incredibly proud” of her team’s performance.

“Everyone stood up today and played their role exactly how we needed them to, and that is what we had to do to win the grand final,” she said.

Vercher, who plays defence in Wentworth’s A Grade side, acknowledged it was tough to come straight off a loss and get her head into the B Grade game.

“Today was hard to be able to get it together and then coach,” she said.

“But I mean, how can you look at those girls and not just pull it together for them.

“You just have to put it away and give everything to the girls coaching wise.

“As soon as you look at the girls, they rely on you, so you just have to step up and be ready to go.”

Vercher said if anything, their loss to Ouyen United in the A Grade just made her team even more hungry to claim the premiership.

“At the start of the game we said, right, after the A Grade game, losing is not an option now,” she said.

“I am so happy that our A and B squad can get around the B Grade girls and enjoy it all.”

Best on court went to 16-year-old Issy McPhee, who stepped up into the side this season alongside 14-year-old Alice Siale and 17-year-old Torah Woodhead after the loss of Sophie Trethowan and Tegan Rodgers to injury earlier in the year.

But Vercher made sure the two injured players wouldn’t miss out of the premiership celebrations.

“We sat them on the bench, and I think it meant a lot to the girls on the court that they could turn around and see them,” she said.

“I’ve never seen someone so happy on the bench – when that whistle went, Teegs had tears in her eyes, and it just means a lot to them.”

Wentworth went on to also win the C Reserve premiership over Irymple.

FINAL SCORE

Wentworth: 47

Robinvale Euston: 28

Best on Court: Issy McPhee
