The greatest can be tested

WHO better to give their opinions on the SFNL A Grade grand final teams than two of the most knowledgeable league stalwarts, Kym Mayne and Jackie Horkings.

Mayne and Horkings’ credentials speak for themselves, having both been involved with the league since its inauguration in 1991 in a number of ways, whether that be as a player, committee member, coach or even a spectator.

Both have received life memberships of the SFNL, while the top netball honour in the league is named after Horkings in honour of her leadership, passion and dedication to the sport.

While she believed Ouyen United were deserving of their place in the pinnacle match, Horkings said it was hard to go past the incredible force of the Roos, even going as far as saying they are the best team the league has ever produced.

“Even if they get tested, I imagine that they will come up another level again,” she said.

“The Imps teams were really strong back in my day, but we didn’t have as many people playing back then.

“The Wentworth team of today I believe would beat the Imps teams of the past.”

Although Mayne also agreed with Horkings that it was most likely the Roos would add yet another premiership cup to their collection, she was not underestimating the Kangas’ ability to fight, especially in finals.

“I would say everything is in favour for Wentworth, purely because they have been the dominant team and Ouyen are only finding their straps now,” she said.

“But I don’t think it is going to be by very much – they won’t have the dominance that they had through the (home-and-away) rounds.

“Previous years have shown it has been only one or two goals’ difference, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that is what it is again, and it comes right down to the final 30 seconds.

“It’s going to be a very strong, physical, highly skilled game, and to be honest, it could go either way.”
