Magpies swoop ‘terrible’ Tigers

RED Cliffs coach Romany Bowen was in no mood to muck around around after her team’s 20-goal loss to Merbein at the Kenny Park courts on Saturday.

When asked to submit her side’s best two players, Bowen simply said, “no best”.

“We played terrible as a team today. We’ve spoken about it, we will dissect it and will play again next week, but that was definitely our worst game of the season,” Bowen said after the 59-39 defeat.

The game started in a scrappy fashion with both sides regularly turning over the ball and settling for long-distance shots from the net.

The Magpies settled quicker and went on to win each quarter while Red Cliffs remained stuck in the rut.

“There were definitely some little spots of fight there, I will give the girls credit for that,” Bowen said.

“But we just didn’t put on the court today what we have been doing at training, so we will look at that and see what happens in the second half of the season.”

Pies coach Breigh Hammet sees her team in the top five with a 3-3 record and also two wins on the trot in what is shaping as a tight battle for fourth and fifth on the A Grade ladder.

“It’s always hard at the start of the season as we always seem to get Wentworth and Mildura and it’s about keeping that confidence in the girls,” Hammet said.

“Yes, we are playing some elite teams but that doesn’t mean you are not competitive.

“I was so proud of them today because they got around each other and had a bit of belief. The biggest problem we have is ‘I think we can’ instead of ‘I know we can’.

“I was really happy to watch them build on that.

“I’m very happy for the girls. It’s the first game this season I’ve seen them all walk off with a smile on their faces and believing they are competitive.”

Johannah Gray and Darcy Chilton were the pick of the happy Magpie bunch.
