Roos run not slowing down

WENTWORTH’S winning streak has extended to 46 matches as the rampaging Roos second half secured them victory over rivals Ouyen United.

What loomed as a massive shootout turned into a brilliant final two quarters for the reigning premiers who turned a four-goal half-time advantage into 59-21 victory.

In a contest that was possibly the most physical you could get in a non-contact sport, players threw themselves at every contest as if their life depended on it.

It went goal for goal for the first 30 scores of the game, the deadlock only broken when when Wentworth were able to make a three-goal break to take the score to 18-15.

While more of the same was anticipated, Wentworth had other ideas as they piled on the first seven goals of the third term to blitz their way to 14 to 3 quarter and lead by 15 at the final change.

The sting had come out of the contest somewhat, although you wouldn’t have guessed it by the intensity of both sides. While pushing themselves to get back into the contests, little turnovers from the home side were capitalised on by the visitors, with defenders Natalie Vercher and Courtney Wakefield playing huge roles.

“We always have a lot of respect for Ouyen United who are a quality side, they can match up really well with everyone and having some really experienced heads in their team we knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Wentworth coach Amanda Edwards said.

“I really backed us, after all the work we did in pre-season, to run out the game really well, fitness isn’t going to be an issue for us this pre-season.”

Having the rolling subs available too has been fantastic because if a match-up isn’t working you can make those changes on the run when it was needed.”

Returning to the club this season, Emily Hosking was also outstanding for the Roos, while emerging defender Lola McInerny was also impressive.

For the home side Ellen Morrish was terrific in her head-to-head battle in centre with Ashlee Cameron, while Casey Crothers and Esther Manley performed well in defence against Edwards and Liz Rowe.
