Manley, Jardine lead way for Ouyen United

A SUPERB first half by Ouyen United set up a five-goal win over a determined South Mildura outfit 43-38 in their first game of the SFNL A Grade netball campaign.

The Kangas led by eight at half time, but the Bulldogs fought back in the third to make it just a two goal margin going into the last quarter.

It was a pleased Kangas coach Kyra Nathan post-game.

“We were very happy to get the wins in A and B Grade,” said Nathan. “We made some great plays and executed the basics really well.”

Esther Manley and Megan Jardine led the way for the winners, while Alyse Ross and Eliza O’Sullivan were named as South’s best.

Ouyen United also welcomed back Casey Crothers, who played mostly in GK, much to the delight of Nathan.

“She is just an exceptional player and a leader,” she said.

“She lifts the team and her combination with Esther (Manley) was phenomenal. It so good to have her back.”

Ouyen United have been well known for their defensive pressure, led by their tenacious midcourt.

“The pressure up front by Megan Jardine and Ellen Morrish allowed Casey to intercept as many times as she did,” said Nathan.

South Mildura’s third quarter was the highest scoring quarter of the game as they rattled off 15 goals to nine to challenge the Kangas.

“South Mildura made their shots and were moving really well,” Nathan said.

They were able to get some crucial turnovers that they were able to turn into goals, so they did a great job to come back like they did.”

Madison Jess came on in the second half and provided a spark for the Bulldogs, shooting 18 goals from goal attack.

Ouyen United have been busy in the off season, repairing the senior court that was unplayable due to water pooling and subsequent damage.

More than 50 volunteers from all components of the club chipped in over the summer to remove the top layer before the resurfacing. The finishing touches were completed under lights on Friday evening.

After seven seasons in their original netball kit, the Kangas have also freshened up their appearance on the court with new dresses.

The Kangas slip straight into fourth place, whilst South Mildura now fall seventh after two tight losses.
