Meringur netball season preview

MERINGUR

COACH: Emily Harlock-Knights

2023 SEASON: Fifth

FIRST MONTH: Werrimull (A), Bambill (H), Cardross (A), Gol Gol (H)

ARRIVALS: Emily Gleeson

DEPARTURES: Nil

OFF-season work and a good blend of youth and experience has the Kangaroos in a good position to climb the ranks, according to first-year coach Emily Harlock-Knights.

For two consecutive seasons, Meringur has won three games and finished in the same position, so a few extra wins and a possible finals berth this year would be a good step forward.

“We put in the hard yards this pre-season and really built some momentum from last year,” Harlock-Knights said.

“We joined the spring carnival and got our name out there.

“We were very close to making finals and in the summer season that Mildura Netball Association ran, we made finals there again.”

With more than 10 years spent at the club in a variety of roles, Harlock-Knights said it made sense to step into her new role.

“Looking at the club as a whole and being so readily involved, it was just the natural next step for me,” she said.

“Keeping girls on from season to season, but also adding some through the summer season, has really helped to diversify our grades and have players try different positions.”

Harlock-Knights said the team’s transitional offence had improved out of sight recently.

“When the ball is turned over or a shot at goal is missed, our attack and ability to bounce back quickly, take that space and work it, getting those turnovers, has really strengthened in the last little bit,” she said.

“I really wouldn’t count Meringur out this year, everyone has worked really hard.”
